The authorities started demolishing on Saturday a dilapidated building near Dalmia Road in Sector-1 of Gulshan-e-Iqbal that had started sinking into the ground and leaned to one side, forcing its evacuation a couple of days ago.
The four-storied building was constructed on 95 square yards and had three shops and flats with a few dozen residents.
The nearby houses were also evacuated and their power and gas supplies suspended as precautionary steps. The demolition work was started by the Cantonment Board Faisal.
The building is located in the Central Government Housing Society. The residents were panicked when they saw the building leaning and contacted police and cantonment board officials.
The contractor, who has been assigned the task of demolishing the building, has hired only three labourers for the job.
The labourers are carrying out the task with hammers only. There are no other tools or machines at the site.
The contractor said it would only 10 days to completely raze the building.
