President Mamnoon lauds economic growth in parliamentary addressISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain addressed the parliament on Wednesday marking the beginning of the new parliamentary year.
The president in his speech appreciated the strengthening of democratic institutions in Pakistan. "The nation has come to the conclusion that development is not possible without democracy."
He claimed that the well-being of any country is calculated by its economic progress. He added the country has shown positive economic indicators in the last year, including a 4.7 percent GPD growth rate.
He added the China Pakistan Economic Corridor will bring “golden opportunities" for development. “Any groups who oppose CPEC should address issues through talks. The CPEC will connect Pakistan to Central Asia boosting trade opportunities.”
He appreciated the opposition for its criticism on the economic policy. 
He lamented the increased intolerance in society with attacks on minorities and women. "Respect for women is not just our religious but our cultural duty too. For the country to progress we need to include more women in the economy."
The president appreciated the sacrifices of the internally displaced persons who left their houses to help the country get rid of terrorists. He added that the intellectual class of the society should get together and think of a counter-terrorism strategy.
He said that Pakistan enjoys good relations with his neighbours. "Our foreign policy has always encouraged dialogues, but sometimes we do not get the same response."
During the President's speech some parliamentarians including Sheerin Mazari chanted slogans against him.
